The development of Yamaha motorcycles is one that took place quite by accident. In 1953 the company was already developing a variety of other products. They were looking for a use for idle pieces of equipment that had once been used to make propellers for airplanes. The ideas for this equipment included sewing machines, auto parts, scooters, all terrain vehicles, and motorcycles. The decision was made to focus on manufacturing motorcycles because of the market demand for them.

The first Yamaha motorcycle was introduced in August of 1954, called the Yamaha YA-1. This bike featured a two stroke single cylinder engine. By July of 1955 Yamaha was creating 200 quality motorcycles each month with a staff of 274 people. The YD-1 was introduced in 1957 as a racing bike. The bike quickly became popular and was featured in the United States Catalina Grand Prix in 1958.

This gave Yamaha the invitation to start selling its motorcycles in the United States with a private dealer in California. To further attract sales in the United States, Yamaha Motor Corporation USA was established in 1977. In 1959 Yamaha introduced the idea of offering a converter kit to consumers. This allowed the motorcycle to be used for both street riding and motocross racing.

By 1960 Yamaha was producing 135,000 bikes per year. 1965 saw the advancement of no longer having to mix oil with gas due to the automatic oiling system. By 1973 Yamaha was selling more than 1 million motorcycles each year worldwide.

During the 1970’s they began working on developing four stroke models to compete with other manufacturers. The results were faster motorcycles that met emissions regulations and were even more economical than the two stroke models. However, they also realized the potential to continue selling two stroke models to consumers as well. Many other manufacturers focused only on four strokes, so Yamaha was able to meet the needs of that target market.

1974 brought the introduction of the YZ250. This model quickly became the largest selling motocross bike because it featured a single horizontal rear suspension system. Yamaha built a racing track right next to the plant, allowing them to continually observe the quality and capabilities of their products.

Yamaha created one of the fastest racing bike models in 1985 with the introduction of the V-Max. This was classified as a muscle bike, with power that was not for the beginning rider. They continue to produce some of the fastest bikes on the market both for street riding and for racing.

Yamaha has never been satisfied to simply stop when they had a good thing going. They always had a vision of achieving more and to strive to further customer satisfaction. The visions and philosophies of the company have proven to be effective in every aspect of motorcycle production. Yamaha Motorcycle Show Inspires at Home Thrill Seekers

The people cringed with fear. The people froze their patoots off. But they stood there slack jawed in awe and desperation for the next heart stopping thrill. They were watching transfixed by the side of the track trying to figure out the order of this improve thrill show. I couldn’t figure it out personally because it seemed to lack any kind of direction. There was a radio guy screaming into the megaphone but I couldn’t make out what he was saying in the blizzard. This is what winter time is like in Michigan. Winters here are intense and I was in for a treat in this unusual afternoon filled with extreme sports and daredevils on ice.

I was there taking digital pictures in the freezing snow trying to figure out what kind of show this was. This was an extreme snow show in Mt. Pleasant Michigan. It was a white out weekend and I was stranded at the Soaring Eagle Resort. Jimmy Blaze and Crew were at hand doing some extreme sports. They had remodeled Yamaha ATV’s and Motorcycles and Kawasaki snowmobiles and were jumping off a huge dirt mound. These guys were flying off that ramp at 60 MPH, and flying at a steady 40 feet in the air. It was kind of nerve racking. The motorcycles were interesting because they had nails coming off the tires to hold traction on the ice track.

Not to be outdone, the racetrack at Walled Lake, Michigan was nonexistent. This town was three hours away but it has been obviously inspired by extreme sports like the Blaze show and broadcasts of WWE’s Raw and Smackdown. The locals were busy stripping off the tires on their motorcycles and putting on homemade tires with makeshift nail traction.

These were do it yourself daredevils looking to make their own history. Creating your own fun like this is inspiring but it is also highly dangerous. Still, I see these guys out on a frozen lake, with no supervision taking their own lives in their own hands. There are accidents galore out there. And I got to tell you that I think it is extremely dangerous to live like that.

What would you do to go out and have the best time ever? I see ambulances down there and cops. Sometimes the good times turn tragic and we have a lot of close calls with safety. Using anything but Yamaha motorcycle parts on your ride is foolish. You should only use Yamaha oem parts. Using original oem parts is important for your Yamaha ATV and will help protect it. You need to think about safety whenever you can. Remember that remodeling your rides may look and sound cool. This can also be a prescription for disaster.

Yamaha Motorcycles – Creativity and Spirit of Challenge

Yamaha Motorcycles, under this motto, employing all its creativity, and with a very strong spirit of challenge, became what it is now: one of the biggest players in the worldwide motorcycling scene.

But Yamaha’s history doesn’t start with motorcycles…

It is back in 1877 that Torakusu Yamaha started with the Nippon Gakki Company that later would become Yamaha Corporation: an important manufacturer of fine musical instruments.

As the company grew, they explored several fields of opportunity in the textile industry and others.

During the World War II, the company set up a factory to produce airplane propellers. This plant played an important role in Yamaha’s entry to the motorcycle industry as you will see.

After the war, Yamaha Corporation had to find new ways to use the tooling and experience that had been accumulated during their times in the airplane industry, and it was then when Yamaha Motor Corporation was founded.

It’s important to mention that even though this new company was just another branch of Yamaha Corporation, it was placed under an independent management. In this case, under the guidance of Ginichi Kawakami; which turned out to be a brilliant move.

Before producing their first motorcycle, Ginichi Kawakami traveled a lot establishing what would be very useful relationships. He also sent out his engineers to Europe and had them learn how to build motorcycles, particularly from DKW; whom with they kept an underground and unofficial long lasting relationship.

One proof of this is that nowadays, the only two manufacturers in the world of mass-produced five side-valve engines are Yamaha an Audi (DKW – Auto Union).

One of the most important legacies from this international relationships were all the skills learnt by Yamaha’s engineers on two stroke engines know-how. Other manufacturers as Suzuki would not reach the same level of development in this area till seven years later.

Not to wonder why the first bike from Yamaha Motorcycles the 125 YA-1 was fairly a faithful copy of the 1949 DKW RT 12. The only two important differences were the four speed gearbox instead of the original three speed gearbox, and a gear transmission replacing the primary chain drive.

Even though the Yamaha YA-1 – baptized “Acatombo” (Red dragonfly) by its fans – had “nothing in special” and was more expensive than its competitors, it almost immediately became a great success.

It was reliable: before putting it into the market, the prototypes were tested along 10,000 miles of rough rides . Even the big boss himself, Ginichi Kawakami, rode the bike without any incident from Hamamatsu to Tokyo.

It was beautiful: with this model Yamaha was the first manufacturer to put special attention to the decoration of the motorcycle. This task was given to GK Design in Tokyo. It’s worth mentioning that this firm has designed the “look” of most Yamaha motorcycles to date.

It was fast: the YA-1 obtained excellent overall results in the most important local races of that time: Mount Fuji (third place) and Mount Asama (first place).

In fact it was this aggressive attitude in the sporting world that helped Yamaha Motorcycles gain fast acceptance even though they made a late start in the motorcycle scene (in comparison to Honda and Suzuki).

In other words: Yamaha Motorcycles showed the world they had arrived to be considered good and fierce competitors from the beginning. Particularly to Honda and Suzuki.

Today, Harley-Davidson has become iconic of American ingenuity and ruggedness. The three Davidson brothers and William S. Harley began building motorcycles from a family shed, and then launched the Harley-Davidson company in 1903. Harley-Davidson introduced innovations, including the 1957 unveiling of its “Sportster” model. A new culture of motorcyclists sporting Harley Davidson boots and leather jackets was born. In addition, Harley-Davidson motorcycles became a symbol of freedom, and a means of exploring America’s open roads.

The year 1965 became a significant year for Harley-Davidson, as the company became public. At that time, the Davidsons and Harleys decided to sell their shares of the company, on the stock market. They sold the company to the American Machine and Foundry Co. (AMF), owned by a Harley-Davidson fan. This transaction provided the company with the financial stability needed to compete against the emerging competition of Japanese motorcycle producers. The Japanese had become a viable motorcycle market competitor.

In the 1970s, Harley-Davidson continued to expand and improve. In particular, the company modernized its production methods. While these changes ultimately improved the quality of the motorcycles, they also created some logistical problems. Secondly, the competition from Japanese motorcycle manufacturers compounded the problem. Many new motorcyclists began choosing Japanese motorcycles, for their affordability and reliability.

To create a trifecta of problems, the U.S. experienced a recession during the early 1980s. In 1981, the mangers of Harley-Davidson virtually saved the company, by engaging in a “management buyout.” They also began using management and production methods that their Japanese competitors had implemented. For instance, they granting employees more input in the manufacturing process, and produced materials as they required them. These changes resulted in higher morale among workers, and more communication between workers and management.

In terms of the motorcycles themselves, Harley-Davidson began making changes to their appearances. They realized that details in their motorcycles’ look could attract or repulse shoppers. Harley-Davidson wanted to give their motorcycle models a face-lift, in order to appeal to a wider scope of potential customers. All of these changes allowed Harley-Davidson to secure roughly a third of the “super heavyweight” U.S. motorcycle market.

Throughout its history, Harley-Davidson has changed with the times. Recently, the company has sponsored several huge online events, requesting Harley-Davidson fans to create audio and video journals of their excursions. From the early days of motorcycles, to the literal freewheeling of the 1960s, and beyond the new millennium, Harley-Davidson has remained a leader in the world of heavyweight motorcycles and accessories.

A Brief History of Harley-Davidson

1903 in Milwaukee – Bill Harley and Arthur Walter Davidson designed and developed a one-cylinder motorcycle. Around the turn of the century the gasoline engine was developed and the one-cylinder motor was introduced. In 1901 the Indians were the first motorcycles and in 1903 Mitschell, Merkel and Yale.

This motorcycle was initially built for racing and was powered by a one-cylinder gasoline combustion engine.So their one-cylinder motorcycle was complete; it was reliable and beautiful in looks. In 1905, 11 cycles in total had been made. 154 by 1908.. by this time they had an official company, in a small wooden barn which was Davidson’s father’s. Although the company was small, it grew quickly, pulling in William; another member of the Davidson family to help. Pretty soon they had over 20 employees working for them. They even upgraded to a purpose-built stone factory.

In 1909, Bill Harley started on the first 1000cc V-Twin. Producing a modest 7 horsepower; the 45-degree V-Twin would become one of the most iconic symbols of Harley-Davidson motorcycles. The V-Twin stayed with Harley for a long time, and although its one of the most recognizable images of Harley-Davidson motorcycles; it wasn’t actually invented by Bill Harley.. he was just following everyone else, at the time, V-Twin motors were the tendency.

In 1910, the legendary ‘Bar & Shield’ logo was placed on every motorcycle they made; to this day being the defining symbol of the company. Winning races, endurance contests and hill climbs also contributed to the validity of the growingly popular Harley-Davidson name. 1911, the ‘F-Head’ engine is introduced which will power the workhorse until 1929.

Construction began on a new six-story factory in 1912. This is also the year that Harley became an international dealer; selling motors in Japan in addition to the now 200 dealerships that it had in the states. 1914 gave birth to the side-car for Harley. The company also reinforced their stamp on the racing world, winning numerous races and becoming known as the “Wrecking Crew.”

1915 witnessed the dawning of the three-speed sliding-gear transmission, a huge mechanical development for them. By 1917, one third of all motors were dispatched to the U.S military overseas to aid the war effort. Not long after; nearly half the motorcycles made by Harley-Davidson were being sold directly to the United States Military. Most of the motorcycles used in the war came from Harley’s factories. Harley-Davidson had now grown to be the biggest producer of motorcycles in the world with around 2,000 dealerships worldwide. They survived the depression of 1918 and carried on strong. But tough days lay ahead. Indian was still in competition with their own V-Twin motors and the price of auto-mobiles dropped as T-Ford was born.

To combat these obstacles, Harley branched out into other areas of production: focusing more time on side-cars, manufacturing parts and even working on aeroplane engines, in addition to developing their motorcycles.

With the 1920’s came changes. The appearance of the motors was altered, changes which made them more comparable to the designing of Harley’s today. One change being the identifiable tear-drop shape of the fuel tank. Single-cylinder engines were once again available in 1926, having been scrapped in 1918. In 1928, the first twin-cam engine and front wheel brakes were available on Harley-Davidson’s motors. This change brought about new heights in terms of speeds; reaching over 85mph.

The 1930’s saw more progress as record breaking and award winning motorcycles were coming straight out of the factory doors. 1932, the ‘Eagle’ design was painted on all Harley-Davidson fuel tanks and modifications were also made to the engine. Not only that but the biggest Harley ever was created, the 1340cc. Which quickly became Harley-Davidson’s trademark motor. But that’s not all.. in 1936 the Knucklehead was launched, viewed by many as the final nail in the coffin of their competitor of the time, ‘Indian.’

When war came around in the 1940’s, once again, Harley-Davidson did it’s bit. In 1941 they virtually stopped all production of civilian motorcycles, the company focused most of its efforts on the production of motors for the military. Harley-Davidson received the Army-Navy ‘E’ award for it’s contribution. November 1945, with the war over civilian production started once more. Purchasing the old A.O Smith Propeller Plant to produce engines in 1947 increased Harley-Davidson productivity. The parts were then shipped back to Juneau Avenue for final assembly. 1949 saw the introduction to hydraulic front brakes on the Hydra-Glide models.

The 1950’s brought more trouble for Harley-Davidson. This time from their friends across the Atlantic; the British owned 40% of the motorcycle industry with their Triumph. But in 1957, fortunately for Harley, they brought out the Sportster, which was the fastest Harley to date. This model was a big success, and, similarly to the British motorcycle industry of the time; Harley-Davidson stayed true to its technique, style and character. After-all it was those qualities that had made it the huge success it was.

It is now 1969.. time for change, big change. In the form of a merger with the American Machine and Foundry Company (AMF). This was extremely beneficial financially for Harley-Davidson, not only that but it also allowed them to produce on an enormous scale, a long way from the small barn from whence they came. However, with the new size and scale of production, quality suffered. The Super Glide and the SLCR Caferacer of 1970 developed a bad reputation. This poor name was unfortunately carried for a few years until Harley-Davidson brought out the new Evolution-motor in 1984; a modern motorcycle, yet still a true Harley.

The 70’s were a very progressive and productive time for Harley-Davidson. 1971 saw the birth of the Cruiser. In 1973 a move of assembly to a larger 400,000 square ft plant in York, Pennsylvania. Through 1975-9 Harley-Davidson won the AMA Grand National Championships in dirt track racing consecutively. 1977 brought the FXS Low Rider and the FLHS Electra Glide Sport to the availability of the public. All of which continued to move the company and brand towards world-wide recognition and success. The continued progress through the 70’s let to senior members of Harley-Davidson being able to buy back the company from AMF.

In 1987 Harley-Davidson introduced its ‘Buy Back Program’ which offered full trade in value on certain models within two years. In the same year the company also acquired a place on the New York Stock Exchange, allowing worldwide public trading of the companies shares and paving the way for significant financial growth. Finally on top of celebrations for its 85th anniversary, Harley-Davidson released the FXSTS Springer Softail. This was widely viewed as a modern day reincarnation of the 40’s Harleys. With it the classic biker looks and the iconic 1340cc engine symbolizing a new era of Harley-Davidson.

The Fat Boy design was introduced in the early 90’s and quickly became extremely popular. The name for which comes from the combination of the two atomic bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima; “Fat Man” and “Little Boy.” Destined from the start to become a collectors item among motorcycle enthusiasts, and few would disagree that it achieved just that. Also in the same year construction of a 31m dollar paint facility began, finishing the following year.

In 1991, the Dyna line of Harley-Davidson’s was introduced to the market, starting with the FXDB Dyna Glide Sturgis. Now 1994 and Harley-Davidson are branching out into super-bike racing with the VR1000. Featuring an advanced duel overhead cam and liquid cooled engine, it showed that Harley wasn’t completely averse to manufacturing a race inspired sport bike.
1996 through 98 saw progress in the form of plants opening in Franklin, product development centre opening in Milwaukee and assembly operation starting in Brazil.

Today in America, Harley-Davidson owns around 62% of the market of motorcycles with 850cc or more. Is a worldwide recognised and respected brand and considered a benchmark in motorcycle manufacture.
